The Meadows Collection
Adela & Mark Meadows

We eventually answer all
correspondence...we could be out and about beating the bushes for unusual treasures, so please
be patient.

PayPal and, as well, we are famous for our slow, painless lay-a-ways.

You’ll notice that prices are not shown; this is done not only to insure our customers’ privacy, but because many items are bought as gifts and still others are sold to dealers and interior designers...situations where the price is better left unpublished.  It's also a way to encourage communication. More often than not, all of the wonderful characteristics of a piece can’t be squeezed into the description area and besides, do you really want everyone to know what you paid for something?

So, if you would like a price on something, have any questions or need more information, please remember that we’re just a click away!

Vintage French Guignol Puppets

Generically speaking, a guignol…pronounced geen-yol…is a French glove puppet...but specifically speaking, the term refers to one of the puppet characters that form part of a spectacle commonly described as the French version of Punch and Judy.

The characters were the invention of Laurent Mourguet, a Lyon silk worker, who in 1808 found himself without a job. He became an itinerate tooth-puller and created his puppet show originally for the purpose of attracting clients, but he soon found that there was an additional benefit...the screams of laughter from the viewers in the waiting area masked the screams of pain of the client currently in the process of having a tooth pulled!

The Guignols continue to entertain French children and adults...here is a detail from a recent sign mounted on a Paris lightpole...
...advising young and old that the curtain was soon to rise for a "pop-up" Guignol performance.
Recurring characters of the irreverent tales of life that form the scripts of the plays include Guignol...shown in the center of the poster...(he's an easily fooled bumpkin said to be modeled after Mourguet himself), Madelon (the wife/girlfriend of Guignol depending upon the storyline), Gnafron...shown on the right in the poster...(his best friend who works as a cobbler and has a penchant for Beaujolais, hence his perpetual red nose), Toinon (Gnafron’s wife/girlfriend), Cassandre (the landlady), Monsieur le Bailli (the lawyer/judge), and...depicted on the far left of the poster...Flageolet (the gendarme or police officer).

Each approximately 11.25 inches high, we have available three different vintage character puppets from a Guignol theatre...formed with wooden heads and hands.

Needing no introduction...

...the Devil has a green face, and a  bit of a mustache to complement his devilish horns and red clothing.  He goes by the name of Athmodée in the Guignol tales...inspired by the demon of that name in the Bible.

Flageolet...the Gendarme or Police Officer...

...he is the perfect picture of a peace officer in his blue uniform

...and Monsieur le Bailli...

...is the Lawyer/Judge...always ready to announce the decision of the Court!

Available individually, they would make wonderful gifts for the Devil, Policeman, or Lawyer/Judge in your life!

Vintage Balloon Molds

Natural latex is the milky sap that is collected from rubber trees and is a key ingredient for making balloons. Another is, of course, the mold. Balloon mold forms range from those that are straight forward, simple and round, on to elongated versions known as 260s...2 inches by 60 inches...the favorite of balloon animal crafters, and then there are the more unusual fantasy shapes...such as what we present here.

These are ceramic molds and provide a touch that crosses into many collecting disciplines and decorating styles...industrial, funky, folk art, nostalgia included. Selling them individually, we have three of each form available...

First, Mickey Mouse...measuring 9.25 inches by one half of an inch wide and in mint condition.

Second...a long eared rascal rabbit...measuring 12.1875 inches by .5625 of an inch and also in mint condition.

Here's a photo of them side by side so you can get a sense of the size of each...

I'm only showing one of each here, but we have three mice and three rabbits...to mix or match as you like.

Of interest to those looking for Vintage Industrial, we also included these balloon molds in our link for Tools of the Trade.
